ISTANBUL - Murat Mercan, chairman of the Turkish Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, said Saturday that "Turkey is the country in our region that is against nuclear weapons and heads the most."
Speaking at a meeting on ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party`s foreign policy, Mercan indicated that "Turkey`s impact on the world and the region is much bigger than any one can expect."
"While Turkish troops walk freely in Afghanistan, the troops of other countries use security escorts in Afghanistan. The escorts have not been the solution. Many foreign troops walk in Afghanistan in Turkish uniforms," Mercan remarked.
Mercan stressed that, unless the Palestinian-Israeli issue is resolved, the world will not have peace and calm.
"We need to place pressure on Israel. However, the existence of Israel must be recognized by the Arabic world. You have to act as a realist," Mercan underlined.
Touching on Iraq, Mercan underscored that the greatest danger in Iraq is the expansion of battles among religious sects.
In regard to Iran, Mercan remarked that Turkey is the country in the region that is against nuclear weapons the most. "Iran is included in the region that should be prevented from having nuclear weapons. We do not want nuclear weapons," Mercan also said.
