ISTANBUL - Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said, "we have to undertake a very active, enterprising and influential role within the scope of the dynamics of a mutually acceptable solution in Cyprus."
Speaking at a symposium titled "Understanding Cyprus" organized in Istanbul by European University of Lefke on Thursday, Soyer said that it is not possible for Cyprus --which is located on a strategic point-- to isolate itself from all political developments and global struggles.
Soyer noted that Turkey and Greece --which have historical and cultural ties with Cyprus-- pursue their interest towards the island within the scope of their national interests as well as international relations.
He noted that a mutually acceptable solution to Cyprus question will open an important door not only to Cyprus, but also to Turkey and Greece in their international relations.
Soyer said that TRNC should undertake an influential role in international relations, adding that this could be provided by solving Cyprus issue.
Soyer recalled that TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias will hold a meeting (on Friday) which will open the path of a negotiation process based on UN parameters. He added that this meeting is important for TRNC.
He said that understanding Cyprus means to understand Turkey and Greece.
