ANKARA - Deniz Baykal, chairman of the Republican People`s Party (CHP) recalled Thursday that there was an ongoing lawsuit for the prohibition of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and emphasized that making amendments to change course of a lawsuit while it was in process would not comply with state of law principle.
Attending a live tv show on CNN Turk channel, Baykal said, "AK Party is creating its own justice, it will turn the constitution into a dress befitting its own body."
Baykal said AK Party and the media bodies supporting it launched a campaign trying to refute the indictment of the case. He said AK Party`s anxious attitude was caused by an underlying worry.
Baykal said if politicians started altering the main pillars of the system and the constitutional order to their own ends, they would harm the country and themselves.
Baykal said if AK Party intervened in the ongoing process by using the majority seats it held in the parliament, serious questions regarding the legitimacy of the ruling party would arise. He said such attempts were proving the righteousness of the assessments in the indictment of the case.
"AK Party is accused of violating the Constitution. The situation in Turkey is different than Europe. An exploitation of religion in the case of Islam would turn everything upside down in politics. When the Republic was founded, this sensitivity was reflected in the Constitution, " said Baykal.
