Within the framework of her contacts yesterday, in the Eastern Mediterranean University Claudia Roth gave a conference on the topic "EU-Turkey Relations and Cyprus".

In the conference, the Co-chairman of the German Greens Party and German Federal Parliamentarian Claudia Roth expressed that although she supported the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island, she believed that it would be incorrect to place this issue as a precondition within comprehensive negotiations.

Expressing the importance of the role the EU, German Parliamentarian Claudia Roth underlined that the problem must be resolved within accordance to UN decision frameworks.

Roth stated, during the epoch of the Annan Plan, 60 thousand people took too the streets and despite that these masses took a blow to their wish for the end of division by the EU, the era was ended after a negative vote from south Cyprus after Papadopoulos had rejected the plan through ultra-nationalistic politics.

Stating that, "The politics of Papadopoulos is a blow against the dignity of the EU", Roth added that the continuation of division within the island is an "open wound".

Roth emphasized the failure of the preventive measures taken by south Cyprus against the Direct Trade Agreement and direct flights to the TRNC.

Expressing the necessity of EU efforts to overcome the isolations adopted upon the Turkish Cypriots, Roth added that she believed that a solution will be acquired to the Cyprus Problem.
