UNITED NATIONS - Turkey`s Permanent Representative to the UN Baki Ilkin said Wednesday that international collaboration in combat against terrorism was necessary.
Taking the floor at the conference titled "threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts" at the UN Security Council, Ilkin said Turkey, as a country which had been suffering from terrorism for over 20 years, was among countries exerting efforts to eradicate terrorism.
Ilkin underlined that terrorism was a global threat and said no country or region was immune from acts of terror. He said fighting terrorism should be a priority for every country and noted that international collaboration was one of the most important factors in this.
Recalling the UN Security Council Resolution 1373 -- carrying the same title with the conference-- adopted in 2001 after September 11th terrorist attacks, Ilkin said it called on countries combatting terrorism to enhance the collaboration amongst themselves. He said Resolution 1373 also asked member countries to avoid providing terrorists with safe havens and hand them over to justice.
Ilkin said all member countries needed to fully enforce resolution 1373 in order for it be effective.
Ilkin said it was very important for countries to either try terrorists (who committed terrorist acts elsewhere) or extradite them to countries where those acts took place.
