NEW YORK/ANKARA - Turkish State Minister Mehmet Simsek said Wednesday, "there is a struggle between those who prefer a democratic and open-society economy and those who prefer protectionism."
"There is a power struggle in Turkey and this takes place between those who can and cannot understand globalization," Simsek told AA correspondent.
Simsek said his earlier remarks that "there is a war of power among globalists and nationalists in Turkey were misunderstood."
In a conference on "Turkey After 2008" organized in New York by the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK) on March 17th, Simsek said, "there is a war of power in Turkey among globalists who understand globalization and nationalists who do not understand globalization and actually reject it."
"There can only be struggle, not war between different ideas in Turkey," he told.
