ANKARA - A total of five people, all of them Iranians, who attempted to hold a demonstration in front of the Iranian Embassy in Ankara to protest events occurred in Iran in 1999, were detained since they did not carry valid passports, sources said on Thursday.
Two out of five protestors made a press release both in Persian and Turkish languages protesting the events which happened on July 8, 1999, when Iranian government was suppressing students protests in Iran .
Turkish security forces detained the five protestors. Sources said that they would be deported after the legal proceedings were completed.
In 1999 the uprising began when police stormed Tehran University's dormitory on July 8. Hours after students rallied against the banning of a liberal newspaper. A student was killed and 20 were injured in the clash. Thousands of students took the streets of Tehran, and within days the demonstrations swelled and spread to eight other cities. More than 1,400 students were arrested in pro-democracy protests in Iran.
