FAMILY VISIT
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a visit to Jordan on Monday upon invitation of King Abdallah II. Prior to his departure, Erdogan told reporters at the airport that issues regarding to the Middle East would be discussed during his visit to Jordan. Sources stated that two leaders had decided to meet when they were on the way to Chicago to attend the funeral of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Erdogan conveyed his views on NATO Summit held in Istanbul on June 28th and 29th and the Middle East to King Abdallah during his visit.

CIVILIAN FOR POSITION OF NSC SECRETARY-GENERAL
Turkish government is likely to name a civilian from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to head the National Security Council (NSC). Sources stated that Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Umit Pamir or Special Representative to Iraq Osman Koruturk can be nominated for the position of NSC secretary general. Sources noted that Foreign Ministry would decide who would be NSC secretary general, stressing that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the issue with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok.

RESIGNATION FROM CHP
Republican People's Party (CHP) Edirne deputy Necdet Budak resigned from his party on Monday. Budak submitted a petition to the parliament, noting that he lost his belief in production of politics in CHP. After his resignation, the number of CHP's seats in the Parliament dropped to 172 and number of independent parliamentarians increased to 7.

EU ENVOYS TO ANKARA NOT INTERESTED MUCH IN LUNCHEON HOSTED BY FORMER DEPUTIES OF DEP
Former deputies of the outlawed Democracy Party (DEP) hosted a luncheon in honor of European Union (EU) envoys to Ankara. Only nine of 24 envoys were present in the luncheon. Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who was also invited to the luncheon, did not attend. Leyla Zana, former deputy of DEP, called on EU envoys to accept Turkey as a full member of EU. Zana said that a decision for giving Turkey a firm start date for entry talks at the end of this year would strengthen the hand of those who are in favor of transformation and peace.

GREAT ACTIVITY IN TOURISM SECTOR
A total of 1,872,770 tourists flew in Turkey in June 2004. The number of tourists visiting Turkey rose by 43.46 percent in the first half of this year, compared with the same period last year. A total of 355,688 German tourists, 236,595 Russian tourists, 192,001 British tourists arrived in Turkey to spend their holiday in June. The number of tourists visiting Turkey between January and June 2004 increased by 43.46 to reach 6,701,825.

A NEW DEAL WITH IMF IN SEPTEMBER
Turkish State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener said that talks on shape of a new deal to be signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were continuing, adding that a new deal would probably be signed with IMF in September. Speaking to a program on private Haberturk tv channel, Sener said that economy officials were discussing the issue currently. Upon a question on real interests, Sener said that interest rates were still very high, noting that interest rates should be reduced.

JAZZ FESTIVAL IN ISTANBUL
The 11th International Istanbul Jazz Festival will start on Wednesday with a concert of ''New Birth Bras Band''. Istanbul Jazz Festival which will take place between July 7th and 18th will be welcoming 33 bands and more than 200 musicians from Turkey and abroad.
The festival is organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. Paco De Lucia, Joan Baez, Bobby Mcferrin And Voicestra, Charlie Haden and many other musicians and bands will give concerts during the festival.

TEACHERS WORKING IN A SECOND JOB DUE TO FINANCIAL PROBLEMS
Teachers work generally in textile, entertainment and tourism sectors in summer due to financial problems. 66 percent of teachers have to work in a second job in Turkey. On the other hand, 12.4 percent of growth could not prevent unemployment in the country. A total of 70,739 people are getting unemployment allowance this year.

EU MESSAGE TO ZANA
Leyla Zana, former deputy of the outlawed Democracy Party (DEP), and her friends told European Union (EU) envoys to Ankara that they wanted peace. Former deputies of DEP hosted a luncheon in honor of EU envoys to Ankara. Talking in favor of Turkey's accession to the EU, Zana said that a decision for giving Turkey a firm start date for entry talks at the end of this year would strengthen the hand of those who are in favor of transformation and peace. After the luncheon, Dutch Ambassador in Ankara Sjoerd Gosses made a brief statement to journalists saying that according to the EU, terrorism is a wrong way.
He added that Turkey was proceeding towards a new future, stressing that it was modernizing and that democracy was in action.

TREASURE IN TRNC
3,200 year old historical artifacts were unearthed in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). A team from Ancient Artifacts and Museums Department excavated 26 artifacts made of bronze in a pithos near Kaleburnu village of Karpaz. Officials said that those artifacts were very valuable.

PEOPLE IN DIYARBAKIR CURSE TERRORISM
Thousands of people who gathered in Cungus Township in southeastern Diyarbakir province held a demonstration to curse terrorism. People coming from nearby townships and villages chanted slogans saying, ''Damn Terrorism, Welcome to Peace and tranquility'' and ''Cungus Condemns Terrorism''. Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Provincial Deputy Chairman said opening of new factories one after another did not suit to the interests of terrorists, stating that, ''it should be known that people do not want terrorism.''

POLICE CONFISCATE 42 KG OF HEROIN AT KAPIKULE BORDER PASS
Turkish police confiscated 42 kg of heroin at Kapikule border pass in northwestern Edirne province. Police seized 42 kilograms of heroin which was hidden in secret parts of a truck at the border pass. Three people were detained.

EU AIMS TO IMPROVE TRADE WITH TRNC
European Union (EU) prepared two packages to improve trade with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Those packages don't include Greek Cypriots. The two packages aim to grant 259 million euros to Turkish Cypriots and improve trade with TRNC. The packages stressed that Turkish Cypriots voted in favor of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan on Cyprus in referenda, stating that isolation on TRNC should end.
