ISTANBUL (CIHAN) - The World Conference of Transportation and Research (WCTR) kicked off in Istanbul on Monday.
Experts and representatives from around the world have gathered in Istanbul to attend the four-day conference. Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yýldýrým said in his opening speech that the transportation sector makes a great contribution to the economy.
The Minister said that Turkey plays an important role in world transportation due to its strategic geographical location. Yýldýrým said that 94 percent of the transportation in Turkey is done on the highways. "It is a very unbalanced distribution. We are trying to solve this problem."
WCTR 2004 Conference Chairman Prof. Dr. Yücel Candemir said at the same meeting that Turkey competed with important countries like Canada and South Africa to attain the hosting of the conference.
There will be nearly 300 sessions during the four-day conference and 1200 announcement will be made.
