AFYON (CIHAN) - Two moderate earthquakes occurred in the environs of the cities of Mugla and Afyon in the late hours of Saturday.
A moderate earthquake rattled the town of Sultandagý, Afyon, on Saturday at 11:29., but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The tremor measuring 4,3 on the Richter scale occurred in the town of Sultandagý, in the western Turkish province of Afyon, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory House said in a statement.
Six people were killed in quake measuring 5,8 on the Richter scale in same town in December 2002. Nine years ago, 90 people lost their lives in the tremor with a magnitude of 6,1in province of Afyon.
Another tremor with a magnitude of 4.3 shook the town of Bodrum, Mugla also in western Turkey, causing panic among the inhabitants. There were no reports of damage or casualties.
Earthquakes happen frequently in Turkey, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Anatolian fault. Turkish people are very sensitive to tremors following a number of high-fatality earthquakes in recent years.
Eighteen people were killed and 21 wounded during a moderate earthquake, with a magnitude of 5,1, on Friday morning whose epicenter was near the eastern Turkish town of Dogubeyazýt, in Agrý province near the Iranian Border.
One of Turkey's worst quakes was recorded in August 1999. Measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 17 thousand people and destroyed or damaged thousands of buildings in the Izmit area of North-Western Anatolia.
