ANKARA - Turkish General Staff Chief Gen. Yasar Buyukanit said Monday establishing a common definition of terror will help global fight against terror.
Speaking at a symposium titled "Global Terrorism and International Cooperation-II" and organized by the Command of Center of Excellence Defense Against Terrorism in Ankara, Gen. Buyukanit indicated that the lack of a common definition for terror could not be the justification for not fighting against it.
"In order for agreements prepared by the United Nations to be effective against terror, countries must make adjustments in their domestic laws. Otherwise, it is not possible for international agreements to be effective against terror. This reality shows the greatest handicap in fight against terror. We must realize that there is no single international agreement that defines terror and terrorism well," Gen. Buyukanit noted.
Meanwhile, Gen. Buyukanit talked to reporters prior to attending the symposium in Ankara.
Reminded about comments made by the leaders of the Turkish opposition parties, Gen. Buyukanit remarked that "the success of the recent ground operation in north of Iraq has been overshadowed by the comments of Turkish opposition leaders. I am deeply saddened on behalf of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK)."
"We defined the remarks made by the Turkish opposition leaders on the recent ground operation as insult to the TSK," Gen. Buyukanit stressed.
Asked about comments made by the TSK on its web site following the criticism by Turkish opposition, Gen. Buyukanit told that it was him who wrote the declaration on the web site.
"I will not allow insults on the TSK. Those who target the TSK with such remarks will find me in front of them," Gen. Buyukanit also said.
