Talat: We Expect UN SG To Take Initiative

LEFKOSA - President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said Thursday TRNC and Turkey wanted Cyprus problem to be solved rapidly, and they were expecting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to take initiative for resumption of talks.
Holding a press conference at Ercan Airport, Talat said during the elections in Greek Cypriot side, a leader who wanted solution was elected instead of the one who did not want so.
Talat noted that a new situation emerged in Greek Cypriot side and it strengthened the hopes.
Talat said they would do their best to make UN`s visit to TRNC (envisaged in April) be the beginning of solution talks.
Talat said he proposed to meet Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias between March 17th and 24th through Michael Moeller, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon`s special representative to Cyprus. Talat added that Christofias responded positively to the proposal.
