TEHRAN - Iranian and US officials will hold their fourth round of talks on security in Iraq in Baghdad on Thursday, the ISNA news agency quoted the head of Iran's delegation Reza Amiri Moghaddam as saying.
"Based on an agreement with the Iraqi government, the fourth round of tripartite negotiations on Iraqi security will be held on Thursday with delegations from Iran, Iraq and the United States," ISNA quoted him as saying.
But the United States said it could not confirm the meeting.
"There's nothing scheduled and we've not heard anything from the Iraqis to indicate that the Iranians have moved forward with a date," US State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said in Washington.
ISNA said the Iranian delegation arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday, adding that the talks with be at the level of "experts" -- meaning the discussions would not involve the two foes' ambassadors.
The announcement comes after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held talks with Iraqi leaders earlier this week in a historic trip that was the first by an Iranian president to the country.
According to ISNA, the request for the talks was made by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
The talks were scheduled to have been held last month but were postponed for what the Iranian foreign ministry said were technical reasons.
The Iraqi foreign ministry and the US embassy in Baghdad have said that the talks were postponed at the behest of Iran, which they said gave no reason for the delay.
Iran and the United States held three rounds of talks about Iraq last year despite mounting tensions over the Iranian nuclear programme. The two foes have had no diplomatic relations since 1980.
The fact that such talks took place at all, given the acrimonious history between the two, was hailed as a landmark event.
US ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Kazemi Qomi held face-to-face talks on May 28 and July 24, the highest level public contacts between the two sides for 27 years.
Both sides also met at experts' level on August 6, but until now there has been no meeting since then.
The United States accuses Iran of meddling in Iraq by helping to train Shiite militias and shipping in armour-piercing bombs for attacks against US troops. Iran vehemently denies the charges.
