ANKARA - Council of State department no: 8 found compulsory classes on religious culture and ethics in primary and secondary schools as against the law with respect to its content.
Upon two lawsuits (on pupils' being exempt from religion classes), the Council of State said, "although the article 24 of the Constitution says that lesson on religious culture and ethics are compulsory at primary and secondary schools, the lesson cannot be accepted as the religious culture and ethics lesson due to its content."
It said compulsory lesson on religious culture and ethics is against the law with respect to its content.
