ISTANBUL (CIHAN) - The Declaration entitled 'Our Security in the New Period' was issued at the Istanbul NATO Summit on Monday.
NATO leaders expanded the mission of NATO in Afghanistan. The joint declaration said that NATO would increase its troop size in Afghanistan to 10,000 to secure the presidential and parliamentary elections in September. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been deployed some 6,400 peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan.
The declaration also said that, "NATO is faced with threats and these threats transformed and extended the extensive geography. We are determined to continue the struggle against these threats. The threats including terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
"NATO is continuing the struggle against these threats by improving military restructuring and military abilities. The new NATO Response Force (NFR) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and the Nuclear Defense Battalion are examples of these changes. The transformations will continue to strengthen the military abilities of NATO".
Referring to the fact that NATO has now completed its mission in Bosnia for the past nine years, the declaration said that NATO would improve collaboration with Russia, the Ukraine, the Middle East and the countries of the Caucasus.
