BUSH SAYS EU SHOULD OPEN NEGOTIATIONS WITH TURKEY
U.S. President George W. Bush said that the European Union (EU) should start full membership negotiations with Turkey as Turkey had met required EU standards. Bush held a joint press conference with EU representatives after the U.S.-EU summit held in Shannon, Ireland and extended strong support to Turkey's EU membership. Bush and his wife Laura Bush arrived in Ankara, Turkey late on Saturday. Bush will start his official meetings on Sunday. U.S. President Bush will meet with Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday.
SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL'S CALL TO EU
The meeting of Socialist International (SI) Committee on Peace, Democracy and Human Rights ended on Saturday after a final declaration was issued. The declaration said that the European Union (EU) should take necessary decisions to open enlargement negotiations with Turkey in December of 2004 without any delay. The statement said, ''the Socialist International Committee on Peace, Democracy and Human Rights, meeting in Istanbul on 25-26 June 2004 reaffirms the importance of a strong support from the international community to help the Iraqi people to approve a Constitution for a secular, democratic, multiethnic, multicultural, and multireligious federal state, safeguarding the political and territorial integrity of Iraq and able to respect the rights of women and minorities, and to organize free and fair elections.''

TWO F-16 AIRCRAFT ESCORT BUSH'S PLANE
U.S. President George Bush arrived in Turkish capital of Ankara at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday to have official meetings. Bush landed at Ankara's Esenboga Airport by the plane, Air Force One. Two F-16 aircraft escorted the plane carrying Bush and other U.S. officials when the plane was landing at the airport. Turkish State Minister Besir Atalay and his wife welcomed Bush and accompanying delegation. U.S. President Bush and his wife Laura Bush are accompanied by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and his National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. Security measures have been tightened at Ankara's Esenboga Airport.

NATO SECRETARY GENERAL VISITS TCG SALIH REIS OF TURKISH NAVAL FORCES
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who came to Istanbul on Saturday, visited TCG Salih Reis, one of five NATO navy ships anchored at Istanbul harbor on the occasion of the NATO Summit in Istanbul to be held between June 28 and 29, 2004.

IT WILL BE A HISTORIC MISTAKE
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi evaluated NATO summit in his interview with the Sabah daily. Berlusconi said that the European Union (EU) should not disappoint Turkish people. The Italian Prime Minister, before he left for Turkey to attend NATO Istanbul Summit, told Sabah that he was an obstinate and passionate advocate of Turkey in the EU, adding that he did not get tired of reiterating that Turkey was a European country. Berlusconi said that Turkey would contribute much to the EU, and noted that if the EU closed its doors to this biggest democratic country, which connected Europe with Asia and which was the cornerstone of NATO, it would be a historic and tragic mistake.

BUSH GIVES MESSAGE TO EUROPE
U.S. President George Bush held a press conference after meeting with EU representatives in Ireland, and started his words with Turkey and praised our country. Bush said that Turkey was a proud country uniting democracy and its Muslim identity. Bush noted that Turkey was meeting European standards, therefore, the EU should open negotiations with Turkey.

INCIRLIK GESTURE FOR BUSH
The government issued a decree on use of Incirlik Base for Iraq before U.S. President George Bush's visit to Turkey and extended the use of the base for one more year. The decree hidden from the public foresees use of Incirlik base in southern Adana province for logistic support, military personnel, and equipment transfer to Iraq for one more year.

''ISTANBUL SPIRIT'' IN NATO
The 55-year Alliance will hold its 16th summit in Istanbul. Groundwork of NATO's structuring in the 21st century will be laid at the summit. Afghanistan and Iraq will be high on agenda. Participants are expected to decide on giving military training to Iraqi army.

AN ISTANBUL TRADITION
Istanbul has been paralyzed due to NATO Summit to be held on June 28 and 29. Istanbul had also been paralyzed in the NATO Summit which was held 44 years ago. All streets in Istanbul were closed to traffic due to NATO Foreign Ministers' Summit which was held on May 2 and 4, 1960. Tight security measures have been taken in Istanbul due to NATO Summit to be held in Istanbul. People in Istanbul were bored of tight security measures.

MESSAGE OF PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IS READY
Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will meet with U.S. President George Bush on Sunday. Bush arrived in Ankara late on Saturday with a crowded delegation. Sources stated that Sezer would tell Bush that Turkey still had some expectations about Cyprus issue and terrorist organization PKK. Sezer will focus on presence of terrorist organization PKK in northern part of Iraq, situation of Turkmens and lifting international isolation on Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in his meeting with Bush. The Presidential Palace will give a message that the United States should take new steps on terrorist organization PKK and Cyprus issue.

Turkish State Minister Besir Atalay said that NATO summit, which had a critical importance in a critical period, was a great prestige for Turkey.

GUL: SOLDIERS WON'T BE SENT TO IRAQ
Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that Turkey would not send soldiers to Iraq under NATO's umbrella.

THREE TURKS KIDNAPPED
Al-Qaida militants kidnapped three Turkish workers in Iraq. The militants warned that they would kill three kidnapped Turks within 72 hours if Turkish companies did not withdraw from Iraq.

WORLD LEFTIST GROUPS EXTEND SUPPORT FOR EU MEMBERSHIP
The meeting of the Socialist International (SI) Committee on Peace, Democracy and Human Rights hosted in Istanbul by Turkish Republican People's Party (CHP), ended after a final declaration was released. The final declaration signed by 168 social democrat and socialist parties member to the SI called on the EU to set a date to open full membership negotiations with Turkey at the Copenhagen summit to be held in December 2004.

WAR SHIPS PROTECT NATO VALLEY FROM STRAIT
Traffic around the area where the NATO summit will be held in Istanbul were taken under control as of yesterday. Sea traffic was under control of the Armed Forces while assault boats carrying SAT commandos are on alert on the Istanbul Strait. F-16 aircraft will start flights over the NATO valley. Today, many roads and streets will be closed to traffic in Ankara and Istanbul.
