ISTANBUL (CIHAN) - A bomb tied to a placard on an overpass on the European side of Istanbul exploded on Saturday. There have been no reports of any casualties.
The bomb exploded when a policeman approached the placard; however, he escaped unharmed. Police sources said that the bomb was a timed percussion bomb.
Turkish police have taken unprecedented security measures for the NATO summit that will bring the leaders of 46 countries including US President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac together in Istanbul.
A second suspect package was detonated by bomb experts in a controlled explosion. Police found that there had been no bomb in the package however.
