BRUSSELS - The European Commission said Friday it can understand Turkey's concerns over safety of its citizens.
However, it expects Turkey to refrain from excessive use of force and respect international law and human rights in its fight against terrorism, Christina Nagy, spokesperson for European Commissioner for enlargement Olli Rehn, said when commenting on Turkey's ground operation into north of Iraq.
Nagy said the commission is receiving information about Turkey's ground operation into north of Iraq and monitoring the developments.
This operation has not changed EU's stance, she told.
The spokesperson reiterated their call for seeking a settlement to problems through dialogue.
Turkish General Staff said Friday that the Armed Forces launched a cross-border ground operation into north of Iraq at 7 p.m. on Thursday to neutralize members of the terrorist organization PKK stationed in north of Iraq and to destroy organizational infrastructure in the region.
