ISTANBUL - The meeting of Socialist International Committee on Peace, Democracy and Human Rights, hosted by Turkish Republican People's Party (CHP), started in Istanbul on Friday.
Socialist International Secretary General Luis Ayala and CHP deputy leader Onur Oymen informed press members about the meeting.
Noting that CHP is an active partner of the Socialist International, Ayala said that he is pleased that CHP leader Deniz Baykal was among the Vice-Presidents of the Socialist International.
Adding that Socialist International has 25 members and they would listen to the views of all members during the meeting that would last for two days. Ayala said that they would discuss three important issues, including how they would further develop peace and democracy on international area; what they could do for a better future in Iraq; what will be the role of Socialist International among international organizations; and how they evaluated their role in comprehensive issues in the field of peace, democracy and security. Ayala added that they would also take up issues, which would be discussed in NATO Summit, from their own perspective.
CHP deputy chairman Oymen also said that Socialist International's decision to form a Committee on Peace, Democracy and Human Rights was very important for Turkey because Turkey is located in a region where those problems are most relevant.
Oymen said that a peace message would be delivered at the end of the meeting, adding that all delegates are for the safeguard of peace.
Representatives from 25 member countries were attending the meeting.
