Turkey Might Intervine In Iraq In The Event Of Civil War- Spokesman

ANKARA (CIHAN) - Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan said on Wednesday that regional countries would have the right to speak on the future of Iraq if the Iraqi people fail to reach a compromise on the territorial integrity of Iraq and engage in civil war.
Responding to questions at his regular weekly press conference in Ankara, Tan said that the most important issue for Turkey concerning Iraq is the territorial integrity of Iraq. Tan said that the UN Security Council resolution also stressed the territorial integrity of Iraq.
Turkey strongly opposes Iraqi Kurdish control of the oil-rich Northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk through planned ethnic migrations that are changing the demographics of the city. Turkey fears that any moves to bolster Iraq`s Kurds could pave the way to the formation of a Kurdish state in Iraq and eventually could fuel separatism among Turkish Kurds in southeast Turkey.
Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gül had told a press conference on Monday that the territorial and political integrity of Iraq should be protected.
Tan said that Iraqi people should decide on the administrative method of Iraq. "Iraqi people should reach an compromise on this issue. If the Iraqi people fails to reach an compromise and if eventually civil war emerges in Iraq, then, the regional countries and international community will have right to intervene."
Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Turkey conveyed her views on Iraq to Iraqi authorities.
