ERZURUM (CIHAN) - 110 illegal immigrants were detained in the town of Horasan, Erzurum, eastern Turkey on Tuesday.
Patrolling in region, the gendarmerie teams stopped a truck on road. In control, gendarmerie teams captured 110 illegal immigrants including Afghan, Bangladeshi and Pakistani immigrants.
It was reported that the illegal immigrants entered Turkey through Van and were planning to go to western countries.
The illegal immigrants will be deported following the completion of preliminary legal procedures.
Every year, the eastern borders of Turkey are crossed by illegal immigrants and refugees from South East Asia and the Middle East who seek to travel on to western countries. Despite intensive security measures enforced by Turkish police, the flow of immigrants continues.
In some cases, the journey ends tragically. Many lose their lives while crossing the Aegean Sea or the military zones in Thrace along the border with Greece.
Earlier this year, a Turkish boat carrying nearly 60 refugees capsized in the Aegean off Mugla and more than 50 people drowned.
In the province of Balýkesir, nearly 20 immigrants drowned when their boat, the 'Begüm', carrying close to 40 immigrants went down in the Sea of Marmara in February this year.
Turkish police have detained nearly 461,000 illegal emigrants in Turkey over the last 7 years. A total of 4,483 human traffickers have been arrested. Last year, Turkish police detained 56,219 immigrants who had entered Turkey illegally with the aim of continuing on towards Western countries.
