NICOSIA (CIHAN) - The Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, Peter Schieder said on Monday that Turkish Cypriot representation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council would be cleared in October.
Peter Schieder said that the issue was discussed in the presidential board of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council on Tuesday and the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council was determined to finalize the issue in October.
Peter Schieder said that General Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of European Council presented a letter to presidential board of the Assembly and the report would determine the status of Turkish Cypriot representation in the Assembly but he did not comment on details of the report.
On Monday, a delegation from the Turkish Cyprus headed by Speaker of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Parliament, Fatma Ekenoðlu flew to Strasbourg to explore ways to obtain representation for Turkish Cypriots not represented by the Cyprus Republic (Greek Cyprus Republic), which became a member of the European Union and technically represents the whole island.
A regulation amendment of Turkey enabling representation of Turkish Cypriot parliamentarians in Parliamentary Assembly of European Council under the name of Turkish Cyprus not under the name of Cyprus Republic (Greek Cyprus) was rejected in the Assembly in April.
The Cyprus Republic (Greek Cyprus), which alleges to be the legitimate government of the island and alleges to represent the whole island, has so far tried to block Turkish Cypriot representation in the Assembly under the name of Turkish Cyprus.
