Baykal: Tension And Polarization Will Escalate

ISTANBUL/ANKARA - The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Deniz Baykal said in regard to the constitutional amendments aiming to lift headscarf ban in universities that tension and polarization would keep escalating in the community.
Prior to his departure for Germany, Baykal told reporters at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul that the process after the approval of amendments would not carry Turkey to a better position.
"Energy of the country will be wasted. Incidents that will take place at universities will not cause solidarity, but division," he stated.
Baykal said it was the first step and it would be impossible to cease the process (started after approval of the constitutional amendment).
"They try to justify this process within the scope of human rights and democracy. The amendments have nothing to do with human rights and democracy," he stated.
Appearing on a TV program in Ankara, Baykal said they would appeal to the Constitutional Court to annul it.
Baykal affirmed not only CHP but also Turkey and Turkish judges hoped that the Constitutional Court would annul amendments.
