ANKARA (CIHAN) - The leader of the Iraqi Kurdistan Patriotic Union (PUK) Celal Talabani, currently visiting Ankara, condemned recent PKK terror attacks on the Turkish army.
Referring to the recent increase in attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) against Turkish security forces in southeast Turkey, Talabani said that supporting any military action against Turkey was treason to the Kurdish people.
Talabani arrived in the Turkish capital on Monday to carry out talks with Turkish foreign ministry officials.
Speaking to reporters at Ankara's Esenboga airport, the PUK leader said that military action against Turkey runs against the interests of the Kurdish people and against democracy itself. "It is treason for the Kurdish people to support any military action against Turkey. We strongly condemn the military actions against the Turkish government."
Terror attacks by the PKK have increased recently in the southeastern region of Turkey following an announcement by the PKK/KONGRA-GEL that they are ending their six-year unilateral ceasefire. Seven Turkish troops and twelve PKK terrorists were killed in recent clashes. Yesterday, five PKK militants were killed in Tunceli.
Regarding the release of the four ex-MPs of the pro-Kurdish Democracy party (DEP), PUK leader said that the decision to free them will play an important role in finding a peaceful solution against terrorism.
Celal Talabani denied reports that Israeli spies are cooperating with Kurds in Northern Iraq against Iran. "We have no hostility toward Iran."
