Turkey Ranked Seventh Among Countries Having Coasts Awarded With Blue Flag

ISTANBUL - Turkey was ranked the seventh among world countries having coasts awarded with the Blue Flag, an international symbol for clean and safe beaches and marinas, Turkish Foundation for Environmental Education (TURCEV) Director General Erol Gungor said on Tuesday.
Gungor released a statement in which he recalled that the General Assembly of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) was held in Morocco.
In its general assembly, the FEE, having 34 members as well as Turkey, decided to place Turkey in the seventh place among countries having beaches and marinas with the Blue Flag, Gungor said.
Gungor noted that 162 beaches and marinas of Turkey had the Blue Flag in 2004.
FEE is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization consisting of Member organizations representing 38 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
The Blue Flag, a respected eco-label, is awarded to beaches and marinas with good environmental management. To gain a Blue Flag, beaches have to meet 27 and marinas 16 criteria, covering water quality, beach/marina management, safety, services and facilities, environmental education and information.
