IZMIR - Turkish mountaineers have opened a banner on Mount Damavand in Iran to support Aegean city Izmir's bid to host Expo 2015.
Kagan Eroz, a member of the Zirve Mountaineering & Natural Sports Club, climbed to 5,671-meter Mount Damavand in Iran last week despite severe weather conditions.
Eroz opened a banner writing "We want to host EXPO 2015 in Izmir" in Turkish and English at the peak of the mountain.
EXPO 2015 is the next scheduled World's Fair after Expo 2012. The 2015 location has not yet been decided, and will be announced in March 2008.
Two candidate cities, Izmir and Italy's Milan, are competing to host the event, which is known as the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
