Drug Traffic Via Turkey Decreased 31 Percent

ANKARA (CIHAN) - Turkish police Chief Gökhan Aydiner said in a press statement on Wednesday that drug traffic via Turkey decreased 31 percent in the last year according to the United Nations.
Aydiner said that Turkey was one of the most successful countries in the World at combating drug trafficking. Drug trafficking in Turkey has decreased by 31 percent in recent years according to UN reports, but the amount of drugs especially opium captured by Turkish police and gendarmerie has increased.
Aydiner said that drugs were smuggled to Turkey from Afghanistan and Lebanon and are then smuggled to European countries from Turkey.
Aydiner also criticized the European Union countries' policy not to consider opium as a strong drug and their lack of action against the personal use of opium. He called on EU countries to act strongly on opium.
Aydiner also said that 605 kilos of opium smuggled from Afghanistan were captured in recent days in Turkey.
