Turkish Cyprus Demands U.N. Security Council To Take Further Steps For Turkish Cyprus Other Than Praises

NICOSIA (CIHAN) - The Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry released a press statement on Wednesday and demanded the United Nations Security Council and the World community bring relief to the problems of Turkish Cypriots and not just praises for its compromising attitude.
Pointing to the United Nations Security Council resolution which extended UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus accepted as of June 11, the Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry said that the statements in the resolution state that UN peacekeeping force will continue to stay in Cyprus with the approval of 'Cyprus Republic'. The Greek Cyprus state alleges to represent the whole island but Turkish Cyprus rejects this and believes that Greek Cyprus represents only the southern side of Cyprus.
"It is clear that it was not an acceptable definition for Turkish Cyprus. The government noted in the UN Security Council resolution is the Greek Cypriot which would mean that it represents the whole island. It is clear that the Greek Cypriot side does represent neither the whole island nor the Turkish Cypriot side," the press statement said. The Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry also called on the UN to determine the future of UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus with the input of both Turkish and Greek Cyprus equally.
Pointing to the simultaneous referendum held in each side of Cyprus on April 24 at which time the Greek Cypriots rejected UN plan of Secretary General Kofi Annan to unite the island, the Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry said that it is clear with the referendum that Greek Cypriots do not represent the whole island.
The Turkish Cypriot Foreign Ministry also stated its uneasiness about the Security Council resolution that did not include certain statements of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's report, which demanded an end of the isolation of Turkish Cyprus and demanded a lifting of the embargo.
Last week, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan submitted a comprehensive report on Cyprus demanding an end to the international isolation of Turkish Cyprus and the continuation of the UN peacekeeping mission on the island for 6 more months.
The Cyprus report, drafted by the UN Special Coordinator to Cyprus, Alvaro De Soto, praises the constructive attitude of the Turkish side that backed the UN peace plan to reunite the divided island and criticizes the uncompromising approach of the Greek Cypriot side which killed the plan by voting overwhelmingly against it in the April 24 referendum. In his Cyprus report, Kofi Annan urged the UN Security Council to encourage all nations to eliminate the unnecessary restrictions and obstacles responsible for the isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
Turkish Foreign Ministry also added that although the UN Security Council resolution has not included statements of UN report for Cyprus demanding lifting of embargoes and end of isolation, the UN Security Council resolution included statements criticizing Turkish side.
