OIC Secretary General Ihsanoglu To Lead The Second Largest Organization After The United Nations

ISTANBUL - Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu who was elected as the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) will lead the second largest organization after the United Nations.
Ihsanoglu was elected as the new Secretary General in the first tour by receiving 32 votes, while candidates of Bangladesh and Malaysia received 12 votes each.
The office of Secretary General which was firstly formed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1970 undertakes all duties and responsibilities regarding the execution of the organization.
The Secretary General, who puts into practice the decisions that are taken during OIC Summits and foreign ministers meetings, also assists activities of secondary organs and committees.
The Secretary General who is elected for four years in Foreign Ministers meeting cannot be elected for more than two consecutive terms. Four Assistant Secretaries Generals are also elected with the Secretary General. The Secretary General presents report to ministers meeting and the summit and gives information about the activities of the Organization. A team which is comprised of experts and diplomats of various countries is helping the Secretary General.
