HISTORIC CALL FROM ISTANBUL
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer called on Islamic countries: ''Make a sincere and realistic evaluation. How will Organization of Islamic Conference turn into an important and influential force?''
Istanbul, which will host world leaders in NATO Summit, convened representatives of 57 Islam countries in OIC summit before the NATO summit.
President Sezer who opened the summit told the Islam countries that, ''attention of international community was directed on Istanbul. Those discussions which were accelerated with the question 'what went wrong' should not be limited to academicians. We all should make a realistic evaluation. The fundamental question is how OIC will turn into an important and influential force.''

GUL: TIME COMES TO SETUP RELATIONS WITH TRNC
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who was elected as term chairman of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), said time came for international community to set up direct economic, trade, social and cultural relations with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

CICEK: ''DO NOT EXPLOIT''
The government expressed its uneasiness about statement of Leyla Zana, the former deputy of the outlawed Democracy Party (DEP) and her friends, who were released from prison last week. Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said, ''Zana talks about extension of the cease-fire for six months. What is she trying to do? A cease-fire can be declared only between two states. Are there two separate states in Turkey? They should not exploit decision of the court to release them from prison.''

BAYKAL REACTS
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said that he would convene the CHP Congress extraordinarily on July 3, 2004. Holding a news conference, Baykal said there would be two main agenda items at the congress, adding, ''one will be to 'discuss the situation of parliamentarians who became intransigent within the party,' and the second will be to 'vote the demand for vote of confidence to the Chairman.'' Baykal said they could not progress with discussions within the party.

GREEN LIGHT FOR TRNC
The 31st Session of Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers started at Istanbul's Lutfi Kirdar Congress and Exhibition Hall. 32 ministers and nearly one thousand delegates from 57 countries are attending the conference. Making the opening remarks of the conference, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer Gul called on the Islamic countries to lift the isolation against Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazzi of Iran handed over term presidency to Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul. The Political Committee decided to refer to TRNC as the Turkish Cypriot State in the final declaration.

ZEBARI PLEDGES NOT TO ALLOW ACTIVITIES OF PKK
Foreign Minister Hosiyar Zebari of Iraq, who is currently in Istanbul to attend the 31st Session of Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers, said that they would not allow the terrorist organization of PKK to stage actions in Iraq.

DRUG WORTH OF 22 TRILLION TURKISH LIRA
Two U.S. citizen women were taken into custody as they were about to bring 25 kg cocaine to Turkey.
In a separate incident, 105 kg heroin, having a market value of 14 trillion lira, was confiscated in a truck in Kapikule Border Gate.

ERDOGAN AMNESTY TO CORRUPTION
''Erbakan amnesty'' was broadened with the directives of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said, ''those who are involved in corruption will find me against them''. Those who are involved in falsification, corruption, embezzlement, and bribery will be considered as ''they have not been sentenced'' on condition that they pay the fine.
With the arrangement that was adopted in Justice sub-commission, efforts are underway to rescue ministers of Justice and Development Party (AK Party), parliamentarians and administrators of organizations.
With the arrangement, Necmettin Erbakan, former leader of the Welfare Party (RP) and former RP parliamentarians will be able to return to politics.

OZKOK: RESOLVED FIGHT WILL CONTINUE
Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok said Turkish Armed Forces will fight against the terrorist organization and fundamentalism which continued its sly activities, without being under the influence of unreasonable statements, and it will render ineffective those efforts.

SEZER: LET US CHANGE
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer pointed out that Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) reached to turning point, and noted that, ''political and social reforms are obligatory in OIC member countries.
Referring to Greater Middle East Initiative without mentioning the name of the initiative, Sezer said, ''Middle East can not remain outside the changes.''
Sezer said, ''It is also a shared desire of my country that the Middle East goes through a transformation in line with contemporary and universal values, and that the people of this region attain a higher level of prosperity and development. In fact, although with differing degrees, this is an ongoing process, and it can neither be halted nor reversed. The issue before us is not whether democracy can be put in place in the Middle East, but how the aspirations for democracy can be addressed and how democracy can be materialized. The leaders of the region will leave a trace in the annals of their countries, to the extent that they take the lead for courageous and far-sighted initiatives. In this process self-criticism is an important aspect.''

''LET'S UNITE''
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who took over term presidency from Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi of Iran at the 31st Session of Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers, called on all Islamic countries to unite against the global problems. ''As the Islamic countries, we should unite to remove all obstacles ahead of us. It is our duty. Our task may be difficult. However, we must not fall to desperation. We must take strength from our common heritage which offers a rational and humanistic understanding of the world. This quality of Islamic culture and tradition has produced remarkable achievements in the past. But it is not enough to content ourselves with the old times. Our present challenge is to work for similar achievements today and in the future,'' he stressed.

TERRORISTS KILL THREE VILLAGE GUARDS IN DORTYOL
A total of three village guards were killed by terrorists in Dortyol town of southern province of Hatay. Hatay Governor Abdulkadir Sari said that three village guards were killed and two people including a worker were injured in an attack in Toktak region in Kapulu village.

ISLAM COUNTRIES TO DEFINE NORHERN IRAQ AS STATE
A consensus was reached at the 31st Session of Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers to invite Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to meetings of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) as the ''Turkish Cypriot State''. Meanwhile, making the opening remarks of the conference, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer called on all Islamic countries to make reforms to adjust to the world. He stressed that democratization process in the Middle East were irreversible.
