CANAKKALE (CIHAN) - A moderate earthquake rattled the western Turkish city of Canakkale on Tuesday at 3:02 p.m., but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The tremor measuring 5,1 on the Richter scale occurred in the Saros gulf of the Aegean Sea, near province of Canakkale, western Turkey, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory House website said.
The residents of the neighboring cities including Edirne and Canakkale had also noticed the moderate earthquake.
Earthquakes happen frequently in Turkey, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Anatolian fault. Turkish people are very sensitive to tremors following very serious earthquakes in recent years.
A moderate quake had rattled the northwestern Turkish city of Tekirdag, nearly 100 kilometers from Istanbul last April.
A moderate tremor measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale late March in the eastern Turkish province of Erzurum had killed 9 people and injured more than 100 others.
One of Turkey's worst quakes was recorded in August 1999. Measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 17 thousand people and destroyed or damaged thousands of buildings in North-Western Anatolia.
