Election For Office Of Secretary General Of O.I.C. Is Likely To Be Today

ISTANBUL (CÝHAN) - Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Abdullah Gül said on Tuesday that the election for the office of Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC) would be probably held on Tuesday.
The 31st foreign ministers Summit of the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC) kicked off in Istanbul on Monday.
Turkey announced Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Director General of the Islamic Conference Organization Research Centre for Islamic History, Art, and Culture (IRCICA), Istanbul, as Turkey's candidate for the office of Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC).
There are also two other candidates, one of whom is from Malaysia and the other from Bangladesh, but the Turkish government has made intense diplomatic efforts for the selection of Ihsanoglu.
The office of Secretary General of OIC works as an executive branch of the Organization and the Secretary General is selected at the summit of foreign ministers of the OIC. Secretary Generals are selected for 4-year terms and can be elected for a second term.
There were three candidates for the first time in the history of the Organization of Islamic Conferences and Abdullah Gül said, "Probably, there will be election today. There has been no such election in the history of the OIC. This will be the first."
