BERLIN - German Federal Parliament Speaker Wolfgang Thierse expressed his sorrow on Monday over the results of referendum in Greek Cypriot side.
Thierse met with Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc.
Thierse said that he sent a letter to Greek Cypriot administration's parliament speaker and conveyed his disappointment and sorrow over the results of referendum.
Thierse said that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) showed that how brave and in favor of peace it was with the results of the referendum.
Thierse said that election of Vural Oger and Cem Ozdemir at European Parliament was an indirect sign for Turkey's membership to the European Union (EU).
Appreciating the reforms in Turkey, Thierse said that those reforms were fulfilled with an amazing rapidity and added that he was pleased with that very much.
TRNC and Greek Cypriot side voted United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem in simultaneous referenda held on April 24.
Sixty-five percent of Turkish Cypriots voted ''yes'' to the Annan plan while 35.09 percent voted against the plan in the simultaneous referenda. A total of 75.83 percent of the Greek Cypriots said ''no'' to the plan while 24.17 of them voted ''yes.''
The rate of participation in the referendum was 84.35 in TRNC and 96.53 percent in the Greek Cypriot side.
Thus, Annan plan was not put into practice in the island.
