ISTANBUL (CIHAN) - The outlawed terror organization PKK/KONGRA-GEL turned down calls from the recently-released former MPs of the pro-Kurdish DEHAP party to reinstate a longstanding truce they ended two weeks ago.
PKK/KONGRA-GEL called off its unilateral six-year ceasefire in early June.
One of the PKK/KONGRA-GEL leaders, Murat Karayilan, announced on the organization`s website that reinstating a complete truce is out of question.
Murat Karayilan claimed that ending the truce does not mean war but a legal defense.
Leyla Zana, one of the freed ex-MPs also called on PKK/KONGRA-GEL to renew its ceasefire for at least six more months.
Tension and violance in the southeastern region of Turkey has escalated recenly since the end the ceasefire. Five members of the security forces, four village guards and five terrorists have been killed in recent weeks.
On Saturday, the Chairman of the pro-Kurdish Democratic People`s Party (DEHAP) Tuncer Bakýrhan called on the terrorist organization, the Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK), also known as KONGRA-GEL, to reinstate its ceasefire in Turkey.
Murat Karayilan stated on the website that they would reinstate the ceasefire if the isolation imposed on PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan is lifted and the Turkish army declares a ceasefire.
PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan has been serving his life sentence in Imrali Prison since 1999.
The separatist activities of the outlawed PKK/KADEK terror organization claimed nearly 30,000 lives in the region. However, the insurgency declined sharply following the capture of Öcalan.
