NICOSIA (CIHAN) - Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopulos is to discuss direct trade for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) with the European Commissioner Responsible for Enlargement, Günter Verheugen in Brussels at the Summit of the European Union on June 17-18.
Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Yorgos Yakovu said in a press conference in Larnaka Airport on Sunday that he believed that the European Commission would make its decision on Turkish Cyprus based on 'international laws'.
Commenting on the statement of Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat that the European Union was preparing to start direct commercial relations with Turkish Cyprus, Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Yakovu said that as of yet there has been no such decision to start direct commercial relations with Turkish Cyprus.
The Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister said that he and Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopulos would meet European Union executives including European Commissioner Günter Verheugen to discuss the direct commercial relations problem.
Yakovu said that he would attend the inter-governmental meeting of the EU Ministry Council in Luxembourg on Tuesday and then he would be in Brussels to attend the meeting of the European Commission on Thursday. He said that Papadopulos would also be in Brussels for European Commission meeting.
The European Union is working to lift the embargo and sanctions on Turkish Cyprus and to end the isolation of Turkish Cyprus after the UN-backed peace plan failed due to rejection by Greek Cyprus in the April 24 referendum.
