NICOSIA (CIHAN) - The Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopulos said on Sunday his government will take important steps towards to Turkish Cypriots.
Greek Cypriot leader, who was blamed by international community for killing UN peace plan, told reporters following casting his vote in EU parliamentary elections that they would take initiatives to boost the cooperation between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots. "We will try to reunify Cyprus and to form a federal Cyprus."
Greek Cypriot Administration entered the European Union on May 1 as only representative of the island, leaving the Turkish Cypriot part outside the wealthy bloc despite fact that Turkish Cypriots heavily voted from reunification.
Hopes to reunify the long-divided Mediterranean island before its May 1 entry into the European Union faded when Greek Cypriots voted heavily against the UN peace deal in the April 24 referendum despite the support of 65% of Turkish Cypriots for the plan
Some 482 thousand Greek Cypriots have been going to polls today to elect their 6 representatives in the European parliament for the first time.
513 Turkish Cypriots, registered to Greek side, will also cast their votes. Only one Turkish Cypriot individually has been running for seat in European parliament.
Cyprus has been ethnically divided since 1974 when Turkey, as guarantor state, intervened in the island in order to ensure the protection of Turkish Cypriots - in response to a coup on the Greek side engineered by the military junta in Greece with a view to uniting the island with Greece.
