''I HAVE RUN FOR THIS FLAG''
Turkish athlete Elvan Abeylegesse who broke world women's 5,000-meter world record in Norway with 14 minutes and 24.68 seconds said that she only thought that she was a Turk when breaking the record. Elvan Abeylegesse stated, ''I have run for our flag. I found every opportunity in Turkey. I will also break many records.'' Elvan became the first Turkish athlete breaking a world record while she overtook her closest rival with six seconds (40 meters).
ERDOGAN LISTENS TO CARRERAS
Following the funeral of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan proceed to Chicago to attend a panel discussion. Erdogan, his wife and son went to concert of world-famous tenor Jose Carreras. Following the concert, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley hosted a dinner in honor of Erdogan.

CLINTON PRAISES ERDOGAN
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with former U.S. President Bill Clinton yesterday. Clinton said that he would lobby for Turkey's European Union (EU) membership and told Erdogan that he was doing great things. Clinton wished that Erdogan would have been the prime minister of Turkey when he was the president of the United States.

HUMANITY BREAKS RECORD
Turkish athlete Elvan Abeylegesse broke a world record in the race she started to save her six siblings, mother and father from hunger. There is a dramatic life story behind Elvan's success. Elvan broke women's 5,000-meter world record in Norway. Elvan came to Turkey with a few more Ethiopians in 1999. The others returned to Ethiopia since they could not adapt themselves to their new life. But, Elvan stayed in Turkey. Undoubtedly, she also faced problems as others but she could not return to Ethiopia. Because, life of her poor family in Ethiopia depended on her success. Elvan worked very hard in five years, broke the world record and her name was written in history.

TWO DIE DUE TO MINE ATTACK
After two soldiers died in eastern Tunceli province the previous day, two more soldiers named Cemal Unlu and Mehmet Zeki Erdem died as landmine was exploded when a military vehicle was passing by a road.

SEVEN TURKS RELEASED IN IRAQ
Seven Turks who were kept hostage in Fallujah, Iraq for 10 days were released yesterday morning. Turkish Foreign Ministry had great role in release of these hostages.

LETTER TO PKK NOT TO BREACH CEASE-FIRE
Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) leader Tuncer Bakir held a press conference and announced his letter calling on the terrorist organization PKK to continue the cease-fire. Bakirhan said that he formerly sent a letter to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, requesting that Erdogan should contribute to peace.

OIC SUMMIT IN ISTANBUL
The 31st Conference of the Foreign Ministers of Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will start in Istanbul, Turkey on Monday. Turkey has two expectations from the summit, including election of its nominee to the office of the OIC secretary general and steps to end isolation of Turkish Cypriots.

BAYKAL: TERRORISM POISONS ATMOSPHERE
Former Democracy Party (DEP) deputies Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak visited Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal. Baykal stressed that a new era should be started in which everybody could use their rights and liberties.

TURKISH CANDIDATE FOR EP
Turkish Cypriot academician Mehmet Hasguler has run his candidacy for election of European parliamentarians held in the Greek Cypriot side today. His target is to establish a bridge of peace. Besides 57 Greek Cypriots, Hasguler is also a candidate for European Parliament (EP) in the elections held in the Greek Cypriot side. Hasguler is living in Turkey for 21 years. Hasguler, who bewildered the Greek Cypriots when he ran his candidacy, said, ''I want people to vote in my favor since I aim to establish a bridge of peace between not only the Turkish and Greek Cypriots but also between Turkey and Greece.''

TAX COLLECTION EXCEEDS LIMITS
Tax collection of 38 quadrillion Turkish liras (TL) between January and May 2004 exceeded 36.8 quadrillion TL target of the government. This figure has raised hopes that Turkey can exceed the annual target.

CHALLENGING RACE IN OIC
Ankara intensified its lobby activities for election of Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu as the secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). Ihsanoglu's chance is getting higher in this race. Turkey also wants the OIC to recognize Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as the ''Turkish Cypriot State.''

ELAZIG SHAKEN BY 4.4-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE
An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted eastern Elazig province at 4.37 p.m. on Saturday. The earthquake which was also felt in Maden town of Elazig caused panic among citizens.

PEOPLE IN SOUTHEASTERN REGION SHOW THEIR REACTION AS A GROUP
People in Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey who suffered much from terrorism showed their reaction as a group. Following the statement of terrorist organization PKK/Kongra-Gel which said that they ended cease-fire, some terrorist activities reappeared in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia Regions. People living in the region who suffered much from terrorism showed clearly their reaction this time. Physicians' associations in southeastern provinces of Diyarbakir, Adiyaman, Batman and Mardin made a joint press statement and stressed that new clashes threatened atmosphere of confidence and tranquility.
