ELVAN BREAKS WORLD RECORD
Turkish athlete Elvan Abeylegesse broke world women's 5,000-meter world record in Norway with 14 minutes and 24.68 seconds. Elvan became the first athlete breaking a world record while she overtook her closest rival with six seconds (40 meters).

HE SERVES TEN DAYS IN PRISON FOR ONE TL DEBT
Debt of Sabit Golbeyoglu, who owns a bakery in Heybeliada, Istanbul for 55 years, to a bank rose to 24 million 800 thousand 5 Turkish liras (TL) due to the interest taken from the debt in 1999. Then, Golbeyoglu's debt climbed to 34 million 849 thousand 356 TL when fees and other costs were charged from him. Court had decided to sequester Golbeyoglu's properties. As Golbeoglu did not hand over the list of his properties, he was sentenced to 10 days of imprisonment. Golbeyoglu said that he could not pay the debt since there was no 1 TL circulating in the market.

ZANA AND FORMER DEP DEPUTIES MEET WITH FM GUL
Former Democracy Party (DEP) deputies Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak, who were released from prison on Wednesday, met with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. This was their first meeting with the government. The group met with Gul, who is currently acting as the Acting Prime Minister since Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in the United States.

EVERYBODY SHOULD FULFIL HIS/HER RESPONSIBILITY
Former Democracy Party (DEP) deputies, who told Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul that Turkey was taking significant steps, gave the message that they would also exert efforts for Turkey's European Union (EU) membership. Gul had a meeting with former DEP deputies Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak at his Residence for 45 minutes. In the meeting, Gul said, ''everybody should fulfil his/her responsibilities in this new era.''

HISTORIC CONFESSION
European Union (EU) Commissioner for enlargement Guenter Verheugen commented on full membership of the Greek Cypriot side as the EU admitted a country which created problems. Verheugen said that the Greek Cypriots were defending their own rights, not the rights of entire Cyprus, adding that this attitude of the Greek Cypriots was making everybody uneasy.

PKK TERROR: ONE SOLDIER DIES
One soldier died and two others were injured in a terrorist attack on eastern Tunceli-Pulumur highway. Terrorists attacked on a gendarme team at Tunceli-Pulumur highway at 1.15 p.m. on Friday and killed one soldier and injured two others. The injured soldiers were taken to Elazig Military Hospital. Operations are continuing in the region.

''TAYYIP! SAVE OUR FATHER''
Families of seven Turkish citizens who were kidnapped in Fallujah, Iraq as they were working for the United States are very sad. Esra Ekinci, daughter of Hayri Ekinci who is among kidnapped Turks in Iraq, said, ''my father went to Iraq to work. Please give us our father. We trust in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He will deal with this issue.''

ERDOGAN: ''I CRITICIZED ADMINISTRATION NOT ISRAEL''
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with representatives of Jewish community in Washington. Erdogan said that his words about Israel were misunderstood. Erdogan said, ''I wasn't criticizing Israel. I was criticizing the administration. Our relations continue and will continue.''

IMF INSISTENCE ON SALARIES
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) continues to insist that Turkey should take new measures about salaries and social security. IMF had similar insistences in its former report and stated that salaries were very high and the retirement age should be raised.

EU-ADJUSTED EDUCATION IN 2005-2006
Curriculum is totally being changed. Students and teachers will be friends. Education system based on summarizing will be ended. The government has speeded up reforms in education, starting from primary education. The National Education Ministry made all curriculum and new school books prepared. This new system will start in pilot regions and be spread all around Turkey at the end of 2005-2006 school year.

ERDOGAN: UNITED STATES SENSITIVE ABOUT PKK
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was in Washington, said that U.S. President George Bush continued to be sensitive about the terrorist organization PKK.

TRAFFIC OF CONFESSION IN STATE
National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Undersecretary Senkal Atasagun met with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul for 45 minutes on MIT's documented confession. News documenting that MIT confessed that it was wiretapping foreign diplomats created repercussions. Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said, ''I don't know how accurate the news is.''

NO INCREASE IN PRICES
Turkish State Minister Abdullatif Sener said that there were some news stories which said that International Monetary Fund (IMF) asked the government to rise prices of Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Salt and Alcohol Enterprises (Tekel) and fuel oil products and added that those stories were not accurate.

ERDOGAN REPRESENTS TURKEY IN FUNERAL OF REAGAN
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the funeral of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington on behalf of Turkey. Turkish Ambassador in Washington Faruk Logoglu accompanied Erdogan during the funeral. Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, was 93 when he died Saturday of pneumonia, as a complication of Alzheimer's disease.

Former Democracy Party (DEP) deputies Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak, who were released from prison on Wednesday, met with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul on Friday. Former DEP deputies who did not reply to questions of reporters at the Foreign Ministry will go to southeastern province of Diyarbakir on Sunday.
