STRASBOURG - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat said on Friday that TRNC should be provided opportunity to open representation at Council of Europe (COE).
Talat met with COE Secretary General Walter Schwimmer in Strasbourg.
Talat expressed the request of TRNC to open a representation at COE headquarters. He said that the Council could also open a representation in TRNC.
The activities of Venice Commission, which examines constitutions of member countries and functions under the auspices of COE, were also taken up during the meeting.
Talat expressed the desire of TRNC to make cooperation with this commission for adjustment of laws or constitutional amendments, which will be adopted in TRNC, with the principles and rules of COE.
The representation of TRNC parliamentarians in COE Parliamentary Assembly was also discussed in the meeting.
Talat asked for the support of Schwimmer for TRNC parliamentarians' participation in COEPA activities.
Talat will depart from Strasbourg on Saturday.
