BATMAN (CÝHAN) - 2 security officers were killed in apparently terror attack in town of Gerçüs, on Thursday evening.
Police officer Serkan Yavuz and guard of Gercüs town governor office Mehmet Ali Atýlgan were martyred by the unidentified assailants when the office of Gercüs governor came under attack, the Batman governor Efkan Ala said on Thursday evening.
A curfew was announced in the town of Gercüs and the entrances to town were closed by the security teams. Several reinforcement forces were transferred into Gercüs from city of Batman.
An intensive military operation was launched in town center and rural are to crack down the assailants.
Terrorist activities in the region have escalated recently. Four troops and two village guards were killed while two troops were severely wounded in recent weeks.
The PKK/KONGRA-Gel rebels early June announced that they had ended their unilateral five-year ceasefire with Turkey.
A few hundred PKK terrorists are believed to be active in the eastern part of Turkey. However, intelligence sources say that some PKK militants have infiltrated Turkey from neighboring Iraq in recent weeks.
The separatist activities of the outlawed PKK/KADEK terror organization claimed nearly 30,000 lives in the region. However, the insurgency of the terror organization has declined sharply following the capture of organization leader Abdullah Öcalan.
