ISLAMABAD - Pakistan rescue officials said 16 other people were killed and 56 wounded in the suicide attack Thursday that assassinated former premier and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
Officials at the government rescue service control room said 16 bodies had been pulled from the scene in Rawalpindi and that 56 wounded had been taken to different hospitals.
Bhutto, a two-time former prime minister, had just addressed a campaign rally for next month's parliamentary elections when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the venue.
Pakistan police tear gas protest after Bhutto killed
Pakistan police used tear gas and batons to break up an angry demonstration Thursday in the city of Peshawar after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, an AFP reporter on the scene said.
More than 100 angry Bhutto supporters blocked the main trunk road in the northwestern city, torching billboards and posters of the main party behind President Pervez Musharraf, a Bhutto rival, before police moved in.
They shouted slogans including "Musharraf is a dog" and "Long live Bhutto". There was also the sound of gunfire, apparently from angry residents firing in the air.
