Turkey's Richest Plant Museum In Ankara

ANKARA - "Ankara University (AU) Herbarium", which was established in capital Ankara in 1933, is the "richest plant museum" in Turkey.
According to sources, AU Herbarium today hosts nearly 8,000 defined plant species and 50,000 preserved plant specimens.
Prof. Osman Ketenoglu from AU's Faculty of Science told A.A that Turkey was a very rich country in terms of diversity of plants.
Ketenoglu said 3,000 out of the 11,000 plant species found in the country were "endemic" type and they were unique to Turkey.
Ketenoglu said different plant species could be preserved and various studies could be carried out on them in herbariums.
He said there were wide collections of moss, lichen and filix mas in AU Herbarium which was a plant gene bank as well.
