LEFKOSA - Ferdi Sabit Soyer PM of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus said they agreed with EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn`s team over beginning of talks for adjustment to EU acquis under 12 chapter headings with the aim of helping the Turkish Cypriot side reach EU standards.
Speaking to BRT, a broadcaster in TRNC, Soyer said talks for the adjustment of the administrative system in TRNC to EU standards would begin in January in this respect, on Tuesday.
Soyer said Rehn`s team had submitted a written proposal regarding adjustment talks to him during his talks in Brussels and said after discussing the proposal as the Turkish side they reached a mutual agreement over the beginning of talks under 12 chapter headings in January.
"Their technical teams will make the necessary studies and preparations with ours. Additional technical studies for the adjustment of all laws will also made," said Soyer.
Answering a question as to why the EU has made such a proposal, Soyer said the Turkish Cypriots had showed political will in the process for adjustment to the EU, and said the EU public and political quarters attached great value to this will.
Soyer pointed out that the EU was starting to realise that the Turkish Cypriots were being prevented from reaching the EU standards under the hegemonic attitude of the Greek Cypriot side and said as a result the EU had made such a proposal.
