OIC TO TAKE INITIAL STEP
Turkish Cypriot people will get rid of international isolation against them at last. The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) will recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as the Turkish Cypriot side during its meeting in Istanbul between June 14 and 16. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday, ''I suppose that the TRNC would possibly be declared as the Turkish Cypriot State as it was envisaged in the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan during the conference. Preliminary reports were prepared to this end.''

SECURITY FORCES IMPOUND 18 KG OF HEROIN
Security forces have impounded 18 kg of heroin in Buyukcekmece district of Istanbul. Acting on a tip-off, security forces stopped and searched a vehicle. They found 18 kg of heroin hidden in secret parts of the vehicle. Two people were taken into custody. The detainees confessed during their interrogation that they would market the illicit drug in European countries.

TOURISTS PREFER TURKEY, NOT SPAIN
A total of 1 million 799 thousand foreign tourists visited Turkey in May of 2004. Number of foreign tourists visiting Turkey in the first five months of the year increased 52.8 percent to 4 million 829 thousand. Number of foreign tourists is expected to rise up to 20 million U.S. dollars till the end of the year. Meanwhile, foreign tourists have begun preferring Turkey instead of other tourists centers in Europe like Spain.

SMEs CO-OPERATION AMONG TURKEY, ITALY, PORTUGAL AND BRAZIL
Final statement of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Second Ministerial-level International Conference on small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) that was held in Istanbul with the aim to support globalization process of SMEs, was issued. Chairmen of Turkey, Italy, Brazil and Portugal delegations, as group of countries that put into practice the Emerging Regional Markets Technology Transfer Network (REMTECH) project which was initiated by Turkey, explained their common intention. these countries will take joint action to prepare the first pilot project in automotive by-industry under REMTECH co-operation project. They will present a joint business and action plan during the 24th OECD SMEs Working Group meeting in French capital Paris in December of 2004. REMTECH project will be open to participation of all OECD-member and non-OECD countries.

SCHROEDER: ''ACCESSION TALKS SHOULD START''
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has said that if the European Union (EU) Commission submitted a positive report about Turkey, the accession talks between Turkey and the EU should start without any delay. In an interview with the French Le Figaro newspaper, Chancellor Schroeder said that Germany's attitude about Turkey's EU process was clear.

BAYKAL CONDEMNS STATEMENT OF FRENCH SOCIALIST PARTY
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal has harshly condemned statement of the French Socialist Party about the so-called Armenian genocide. He said, ''it is quite unfortunate and baseless to defend that Turkey's accession to the European Union (EU) should depend on its recognizing the so-called Armenian genocide. Such a genocide had never taken place in history of Turkish people.''

BUSH TO BRING A PACKAGE OF PROPOSALS TO TURKEY
U.S. President George W. Bush will pay a state visit to Turkey between June 26 and 27 prior to the summit of heads of state and government of NATO in Istanbul. During the visit, President Bush is expected to give the message that Turkey should not delay making some decisions within the parliamentary process. The United States is planning to give new functions to Turkey structure of its global military forces and to use whole Turkey as a logistic base. Turkey is negative about all these plans.

PROTESTS AGAINST NATO AND BUSH
Labor Party (IP) has held a demonstration to protest the scheduled visit of U.S. President George W. Bush to Turkey. Nearly 60 members of IP gathered in Ankara's Kizilay Square. They chanted slogans against the United States and U.S. President Bush. Later, they made a press release claiming, ''President Bush will visit Turkey with the aim of putting into practice his dark thoughts about the Middle East. He should be considered a war criminal. President Bush's visit to Turkey aims to take both Turkey and the Middle East under the U.S. sovereignty. He plans to replace U.S. soldiers in Iraq with Turkish soldiers. His plan is unacceptable.''

19 VETOS IN 18 MONTHS
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer vetoed 19 laws and appointments adopted by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government in the last 18 months. Recently, President Sezer vetoed the Higher Education Board (YOK) law.

HAND IN HAND FOR ENVIRONMENT
June 5 World Environment Day was celebrated throughout Turkey. Students and non-governmental organizations held demonstrations in several provinces including central province of Kayseri and Istanbul. Meanwhile, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said that several education initiatives should be launched to increase people's consciousness about environment.

CHILD ABUSE SHOULD BE PUNISHED
A father beat his son in Sweden because he could not win a tennis match. The father was firstly sentenced to 1.5 years in prison but later he was punished to pay 43 billion Turkish liras (TL) fine and banned from entering Sweden for seven years. Meanwhile, a child was reported missing in a mountainous area in eastern province of Van yesterday. The child was found alive but his father beat him before everyone with his belt by shouting at him, ''where were you?'' Police calmed the father down and later handed over his to him and they went home. Meanwhile, a mother in the United States smeared peppery sauce on his 5-month-old baby's fingers to prevent him from sucking them. When the baby was dead as he couldn't breathe due to peppery sauce, the mother was arrested and she was charged with murder. Meanwhile, a mother in Aksaray brought her 9-month-old baby girl to hospital saying that ''she fell down from cradle''. Her arms and legs were broken and she was suffering bruises on her body. The mother was detained upon doctor's report but she was later released due to lack of evidence.

SUPPORT FROM OIC
Turkey's policy toward the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has started to produce good results. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that in the final statement of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting in Istanbul, OIC member nations would recognize the TRNC as the ''Turkish Cypriot State'' as it was proposed in Annan's report.

STORM OF QUAKES
Earthquakes measuring 4, 3, 3.1, 2.7, 3.4, 3.3 and 2.9 on the Richter scale happened in Aegean Sea, Denizli, Balikesir, Erzincan, Corum and Bursa, respectively.

GENERAL STAFF DENIES
The General Staff denied a news report which claimed that Turkish soldiers captured U.S. soldiers in Northern Iraq and covered their heads with sacks. The General Staff said, ''it was baseless.''

TURKEY TO START BOSNIAN LANGUAGE BROADCASTS NEXT WEEK
Turkey will start regular broadcasts in different languages, part of an effort to fulfil the Copenhagen criteria. Turkish Radio and Television Corp. (TRT) Director General Senol Demiroz said that the broadcasts would begin on Monday, June 7. The weekly program of the broadcasts in different languages are as follows: Bosnian on Monday, Arabic on Tuesday, Kurdish on Wednesday and Circassian on Thursday.
