''IF YOU ARE CLEVER ENOUGH, YOU SHOULD ACCEPT TURKEY''
In his article in the Forbes Magazine, Steve Forbes, one of the leading publishers in the United States, has said that if diplomats in the European Union (EU) nations, especially in France, were clever enough, they should accept Turkey's membership as soon as possible. He stressed that despite Turkey's good-will efforts about annulment of death sentence, the Cyprus issue and the war in Iraq, France had shown a very negative stance on Turkey's EU process.

TURKEY TO START BOSNIAN LANGUAGE BROADCASTS NEXT WEEK
Turkey will start regular broadcasts in different languages, part of an effort to fulfil the Copenhagen criteria. Turkish Radio and Television Corp. (TRT) Director General Senol Demiroz said that the broadcasts would begin on Monday, June 7. The weekly program of the broadcasts in different languages are as follows: Bosnian on Monday, Arabic on Tuesday, Kurdish on Wednesday and Circassian on Thursday.

NEW REQUESTS OF UNITED STATES
According to the Defense and Economic Co-operation Agreement, the United States can have 48 F-16 war planes at the Incirlik Air Base in southern province of Adana. The United States has been launching initiatives to increase the number of its war planes at the base. The United States also wants Turkey to lift the obligation of states of arriving and departing war planes. Meanwhile, the United States requested Turkey to restrict authorities of Turkish commander at the base.

GUL: ''ANNAN'S REPORT ON CYPRUS IS HONEST''
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul has said about United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's Cyprus report, ''the report was prepared honestly''. Noting that the plan also included the thesis of the Turkish Cypriot side, Gul said that the plan reflected the facts on the island.

POSITIVE MESSAGE FROM EU TO TURKEY
Final statement of the interim summit of heads of state and government of European Union (EU) countries to be held between June 17 and 18 has been prepared. The statement eulogized Turkey for making a rapid progress in adjustment to the EU. The statement noted that accession talks between the EU and Turkey would start without any delay.

TREASURY TO CONDUCT 2 AUCTIONS NEXT WEEK
Turkish Treasury will conduct two auctions on June 8 to sell 154-day and 350-day discounted treasury-bills denominated in Turkish lira (TL). Treasury said that value date of 154-day t-bills is June 9, 2004 and maturity is November 10, 2004. It said that value date of 350-day t-bills is June 9, 2004 and maturity is May 25, 2005.

EGYPT OWNS WEAPONS
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that the Egyptian government claimed ownership of a rocket launcher, a remote-controlled missile and other weapons seized at Istanbul port of Ambarli. Foreign Ministry officials said the issue did not have diplomatic dimension, and it was completely investigated in criminal level.

FUEL OIL SMUGGLING INCREASES OVER TO 40 THOUSAND TONS
The Customs Director General announced that there had been intense fuel oil smuggling as tax rate on fuel oil in Turkey was high. ''The amount of fuel oil we confiscated from trucks as they exceeded the limits has increased over to forty thousand tons, and it is the amount in last three-four months.''

IMF: ''DEBTS CAN BE DELAYED''
International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation currently in Turkey under the eighth review efforts, have met with directors of the Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM) and Individual Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (MUSIAD). During the meetings, IMF delegation gave the message that some part of Turkey's debts could be delayed.

WE TEACH IT BUT WE FAIL
State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said, ''we taught Poland how to make privatization in 1984. They completed the job but we failed to show even little progress.'' Noting that Turkey really needed privatization, Tuzmen said, ''we slowly know how to make privatization but I believe that everybody will understand in time how this issue is important. We are still at the beginning of privatization. Turkey learns privatization by method of trial and error but learning process continues.''

MATTHAEUS O.K.
Besiktas agreed on terms with Hungary's national team coach Lothar Matthaeus of Germany. Matthaeus is expected to come to Istanbul on Monday or Tuesday to sign contract as Besiktas coach.

U.S. WANTS TO DEPLOY MORE F-16 PLANES IN INCIRLIK
It is claimed that the United States was planning to shift a wing of its F-16 fighters from its base in Germany to Incirlik base. Diplomatic sources said U.S. administration had been carrying out a study on distribution of its forces around the world but Turkey had not received any application yet. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that the United States had not made further demand for Incirlik. It is mentioned that the issue might come onto the agenda during U.S. President Bush's visit to Turkey at the end of June. According to a news of New York Times, a wing of F-16 fighters may be shifted from U.S. base in Spangdahlem, Germany, to the Incirlik base in Turkey, which would move the aircraft closer to the volatile Middle East; a wing generally consists of 72 aircraft, and under the Pentagon plan, ''the shift would be carried out only if the Turks gave the United States broad latitude for using them'', something that some officials see as unlikely.

NAME OF NEW ORDER IN MIDDLE EAST: FUTURE FORUM
With the aim of spreading democracy and culture of liberal economy in the Middle East, the United States is planning to form ''Future Forum'' comprising foreign and economy ministers. ''Enlarged Middle East and North Africa Project'' which will be presented as the mixture of the Greater Middle East Initiative prepared by the United States and the Mediterranean Dialogue conducted by the European Union countries, grants the countries in the region the right to participate in the process in level of their desire. Meanwhile, the union that the D-8 and countries in the region will form under leadership of the United States will be called ''Partnership for Progress and Future''. Also Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is invited to the D-8 summit between June 8-10. By saying that security and political, economic and social situation in the Middle East and North Africa affect them, the United States will call on D-8 countries to make decisions to set the regions in order. If the sides approach positively, there will be cooperation with the countries in the region under umbrella of ''Partnership for Progress and Future'' which will re-design the region.
