LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Wednesday that the European Union (EU) should confirm that ''Cyprus'' accepted as EU member comprised of only the Greek Cypriots.
Denktas told reporters that the Greek Cypriot administration could take steps to alter the 1960 constitution together with the Turkish Cypriots.
The 1960 constitution provides the Cyprus Republic with bi-communal structure.
Denktas said that the EU should stop attempts to condone rule of law.
''Such a law has not been put into practice for Turks for 40 years. The Greek Cypriots have done their best to show themselves as possessor of entire Cyprus with the lie that they had to make some changes to the constitution,'' Denktas stated.
Denktas pointed out that the alteration would be made to adjust to EU acquis and added, ''the current situation shows that there are two states in Cyprus. The simultaneous referenda held in the island also confirmed this situation. Presence of two separate nations in Cyprus having the right to self-determination is an undeniable fact.''
TRNC and Greek Cypriot side voted United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem in simultaneous referenda in Cyprus on April 24.
Sixty-five percent of Turkish Cypriots voted ''yes'' to the Annan plan while 35.09 percent voted against the plan in the simultaneous referenda. A total of 75.83 percent of the Greek Cypriots said ''no'' to the plan while 24.17 of them voted ''yes.''
The rate of participation in the referendum was 84.35 in TRNC and 96.53 percent in the Greek Cypriot side.
Thus, Annan plan was not put into practice in the island and the Greek Cypriot side joined the EU on May 1 unilaterally together with nine other countries.
