Public Sector Reform Is Best Way To Combat Corruption, Zachau

ANKARA - Ulrich Zachau, the World Bank's country director for Turkey, said Wednesday the best way to counter corruption is to reform the public sector .
"There is corruption in every country but it makes less harm in some countries because the public sector works efficiently and public reforms are done," Zachau told a conference on combatting corruption.
Turkish Economic Policies Studies Foundation (TEPAV) is organizing the conference in capital Ankara.
Zachau said one of the most important factors in public sector reform is transparency, which is required for competition, employment and a strong public sector.
According to Zachau, Turkey has made great progress in modernizing public services. "However there is still steps to be taken," he said.
Zachau said education has an important role in public sector reform.
Turkey has to make more reforms to speed up judicial services, adjust its laws with EU jurisdiction and assure the independency of the judiciary, he also said.
