WASHINGTON - The US Supreme Court said Friday it will review in coming months the cases of two Americans detained in Iraq, who want their cases handled under American law.
Mohamed Munaf served as a guide to three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005 when he was taken hostage and held in captivity for 55 days.
Upon his release, he was detained by US forces, sentenced to death by an Iraqi court and should be hanged as soon as the US military hands him over to the Iraqis.
Shawqi Ahmad Omar was arrested in October 2004 in his residence in Baghdad. According to his family, he went to Iraq, trying to get a job with one of the reconstruction projects.
The US government insists he was a member of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. His case is pending now before an Iraqi court.
The two men want the US justice system to handle their cases, but the US government insist US federal judges don't have jurisdiction over their cases because they were detained in a sovereign nation.
