Turkey Should Become E.U. Member If It Fulfils Criteria, Socrates

BERLIN - Jose Socrates, the PM of Portugal -- the current president of the European Union (EU), said Sunday Turkey should become a member of the Union if it fulfils the required criteria.
"Europe has made a promise and therefore we should admit this country to the Union when it meets the required criteria," he told German Der Spiegel magazine.
Socrates said the EU should not forget about its responsibilities regarding the countries with which it has launched full membership negotiations.
