U.S. PRESIDENT BUSH DUE IN TURKEY
U.S. President George W. Bush will come to Ankara late on June 26, 2004. He will meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan first. President Bush will visit the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern and secular Republic of Turkey. Later, President Bush will meet with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer at the Cankaya Presidential Palace. President Sezer will host a luncheon in honor of President Bush. Following the luncheon, President Bush will proceed to Istanbul to attend NATO Summit between June 28 and 29, 2004.

ISTANBUL TO HOST 57TH CONGRESS OF WAN
The 57th congress of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) will be held in Istanbul between May 29 and June 2, 2004. Nearly 1 thousand 400 people are expected to attend the congress. The theme of the congress was announced as ''Competition of World Press with Internet and New Technologies''. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to make opening remarks of the congress. Owners or editors in chief of leading world newspapers such as Washington Post of the United States, El Pais of Spain and Le Monde of France.

''ACCESSION TALKS WILL START''
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who attended Turkey-the European Union (EU) Accession Partnership Council meetings in Brussels, has said, ''I am sure that the EU will make a decision in December to open accession talks with Turkey.'' Referring to the recent package of constitutional amendments, Gul said, ''we should work harder now. Turkey's future is in question. The government will follow the implementation of reforms by using the method of intervention. We will not tolerate any attempt aiming to prevent implementation of reforms.''

''WAIT FOR A FEW WEEKS''
European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen has said that he was satisfied with Turkey's steps to fulfil Copenhagen political criteria. Noting that the EU was aware of importance of Turkey's progress, Verheugen said that he wanted to encourage Turkey in its EU membership process. Verheugen said that Turkey should wait a few weeks for the EU to make decisions to lift the isolation against Turkish Cypriot people. Referring to re-trial process of former deputies of the Democracy Party (DEP) which was banned by the Constitutional Court, Verheugen said that former DEP deputies should be released. He added that the jurisdiction was against the reform process and the government, not Zana and her friends.

KAPLAN TO BE DEPORTED
An administrative court in Cologne, Germany, has approved a decision on deportation of Metin Kaplan, the head of Cologne-based Association of Islamic Organizations and Communities. The court said that Kaplan's residence permit in Germany had ended. Kaplan was sentenced to four-year imprisonment in Germany for incitement to murder his rival Ibrahim Sofu. He was released after serving his imprisonment term. Earlier, Germany banned activities of the Association of Islamic Organizations and Communities, but it did not extradite Kaplan to Turkey because of the presence of death sentence in the Turkish Constitution. However, the death sentence was lifted in Turkey under a package of adjustment to the European Union.

CONSULTATION PERIOD WITH IMF
State Minister Ali Babacan has said that a new period would start in the relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Babacan noted, ''the Article 4 of the IMF Agreement will be put into practice. We will hold regular consultations with IMF high-level officials and made decisions. IMF European I Department Director Michael Deppler and IMF Executive Director Willy Kiekens will come to Turkey on June 3. They will meet with representatives of Turkish private sector and non-governmental organizations. Later, we will meet with them on June 6 to make our final decision about course of relations with IMF in the coming period.''

FOUR IRAQI TERRORISTS IN TURKEY
A terrorist of Iraqi origin, who surrendered to security forces in Yuksekova town of eastern province of Hakkari, has claimed that four other terrorists had entered Turkey to carry out sabotage acts. Hakkari Governor Erdogan Gurbuz said that the terrorist surrendered to Turkish security forces on May 18. He noted that security forces acting on information given by the terrorist, had taken tight measures in city center and towns.

NGOs: ''WE WILL NOT MAKE ANY CONCESSION FROM DEMOCRACY''
In their messages to mark the May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have stressed that they would not make any concessions from democracy and secularism.

Defending that Turkey had fulfilled the Copenhagen political criteria, Gul said that the accession talks between Turkey and the EU would start.

''RELATIONS WITH IMF WILL CONTINUE''
State Minister Ali Babacan has said that course of the relations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after 2005 would be discussed in June of 2004. Babacan said, ''IMF officials will come to Turkey for the eighth review and Article 4 of the agreement. We will hold talks with IMF high-level officials and determine the course of our relations in the coming period.''

SAAKASHVILI DUE IN ANKARA
President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia will come to Ankara today as the official guest of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. On the eve of his state visit to Turkey, President Saakashvili highlighted importance of his visit in regard to further improvement of the bilateral relations and strategic partnership between Turkey and Georgia. Noting that Turkey had made significant contributions to efforts to provide stability in the region with its lasting and progressive democracy, President Saakashvili said that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline project was of vital importance in regard to economic development of Georgia. An official welcoming ceremony will take place at the Cankaya Presidential Palace in honor of President Saakashvili.
MAY 19 CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT TURKEY AND TRNC
May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day was celebrated throughout Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). A number of people watched the ceremonies. All politicians attended the ceremonies together with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, and displayed an exemplary unity and solidarity.

PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION LEAVES FOR PALESTINE
Parliamentary Turkey-Palestine Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group led by Huseyin Tanriverdi of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) left for Palestine yesterday. Tanriverdi said before their departure that Turkish deputies would pay an official visit to Palestine for the first time. ''We are going to Palestine for humanitarian purposes. I hope that our visit would contribute to Middle East peace process,'' he added. The delegation will meet with President Yasser Arafat of Palestine and with the other high-level Palestinian officials. They will also visit refugee camps.
